Russell Shorto, speaker at the Van der Leeuw lecture, will talk about the elites and masses in the American Revolution on November 6. There are two theories on the American Revolution. The so-called Great Men-theory assumes that revolutionary ideas were formed by an elite that was strongly influenced by the Enlightenment thinkers in Europe. The other theory holds that the revolutionary impulse came from below, by ordinary townspeople and religious innovators. In the Van der Leeuw-lecture, Shorto will attempt to bring both theories together.
