Originality and authenticity may seem like tidy concepts with fixed borders, but these borders are slowly dissolving. Impakt Festival 2016: Authenticity? will look into these issues with a programme of lectures, screenings and exhibitions, which will take place at various locations in Utrecht from 26 until 30 October. The gallery of Fotodok/Casco at Lange Nieuwstraat 7 in the city centre will display works by DIS, Harm van den Dorpel, Tobias Kaspar, Oliver Laric, Jonas Lund & Sebastian Schmieg, Elise van Mourik, Amalia Ulman and Beny Wagner, while The Rietveld Model House at Erasmuslaan 9 will provide the backdrop to works by General Idea and Korakrit Arunanondchai.
There are several American artists present at the festival: the New York-based collective artist collective DIS established their own artist-made stock-photo service DISimages, which will be on display at the exhibition. Amalia Ulman’s videowork Privilege addresses fluid identities, ranging between authenticity and consumerism, when sincerity can be both authentic and ironic. Beny Wagner uses unexpected metaphors: camouflage and petroleum. In his videos Wagner attempts to translate the overwhelming global reality into an uncertain relationship to the self.
